The Four Sessions and What Trades in Each

The trading day begins in Sydney, which opens the week and tends to be the quietest session with thinner liquidity. Tokyo follows and brings the Asian session to life, where the yen and Asia-Pacific pairs see the most movement. London is the heavyweight: it overlaps the end of the Asian session, handles the largest share of daily forex volume, and usually sets the range for the day. New York opens while London is still trading and drives the dollar, especially around United States economic releases.

Which pairs you trade should influence when you trade. A yen scalper has more to work with in the Tokyo session, while a EURUSD or GBPUSD trader will find the cleanest moves during the London and New York hours. The clock above shows all four at once so you can match your instrument to the session that actually moves it.

Session Overlaps: Where the Volume Is

Overlaps are the busiest windows because two financial centers are trading at the same time. The London and New York overlap, roughly 13:00 to 17:00 London time, is the deepest and most volatile stretch of the day, when the majority of daily volume changes hands and spreads are tightest. If you can only trade for a few hours, this is usually the window to pick.

There is a smaller Tokyo and London overlap in the early London morning, useful for yen crosses, and the Sydney and Tokyo hours run together through the Asian session. The tool tints the overlap zones in the 24-hour map so you can see at a glance when two sessions are live together in your own timezone.

DST: Why Session Times Shift Twice a Year

The session times you see shift twice a year because the home markets observe daylight saving on their own schedules. London, New York, and Sydney all change their clocks, but on different dates, so for a week or two in spring and autumn the gap between them widens or narrows and the overlaps change length. A trader who memorized fixed UTC session times gets caught out every one of these transitions.

This tool sidesteps the trap by computing each session from its home timezone with live daylight-saving rules, then rendering it into your timezone, rather than using hardcoded offsets. When the clocks change anywhere, the sessions and overlaps here update automatically, so the times stay correct without you having to think about it.

quiz Frequently Asked Questions

When does the forex market open on Sunday?expand_more
The market reopens on Sunday evening in UTC, when the Sydney session starts the new trading week, around 22:00 UTC depending on daylight saving. The exact moment your broker quotes prices can differ slightly. The clock above shows the next open in your own timezone.
What time does London open in my timezone?expand_more
The London session opens at 08:00 London time, which the tool converts to your local time automatically at the top of the London row. Because London observes daylight saving, that local time shifts by an hour twice a year, and the clock keeps it correct for you.
Which forex session is the most volatile?expand_more
The London and New York overlap, roughly 13:00 to 17:00 London time, is usually the most volatile and the highest volume window of the day, because the two largest trading centers are open at once. Spreads tend to be tightest then, especially on the major pairs.
Can I trade during the weekend gap?expand_more
The spot forex market is closed from Friday evening to Sunday evening UTC, so you cannot open or close positions during the weekend gap. Price can move over the weekend on news, which is why the market often reopens with a gap. Crypto, by contrast, trades through the weekend.
Why did session times change this week?expand_more
Almost always daylight saving. London, New York, and Sydney switch their clocks on different dates, so for a week or two around each transition the session times and overlap lengths shift. This tool recomputes from live timezone rules, so the times it shows are already adjusted.
Do all brokers open at exactly the same time?expand_more
No. The session hours here follow the home markets, but each broker sets its own server time and rollover, so the exact minute quotes start and stop on Sunday and Friday varies a little between brokers. Treat the times as the market standard and confirm the precise hours with your broker.
